A story about a group of unlikely upstarts who crossed paths at the University of Chicago in the middle of the 20th century, including David Booth, Eugene Fama, Rex Sinquefield, and others who would later be key to the founding of Dimensional Fund Advisors.
Together, these unique individuals revolutionized finance and proved there was another, better way to think about investing
These advances can help even more people have a better investing experience. That is why we asked Dimensional to make this film available to our clients and friends. The documentary is an illuminating exploration of how markets work, of science triumphing over speculation, of the financial advice industry undergoing radical change—and how all that can help investors pursue their goals.
Among the innovations by members of this group was the creation of index funds, which would give the average investor low-cost access to the market’s returns. Later, Dimensional broke ground by going beyond index funds, implementing research that showed which areas of the market had historically outperformed and offering investors an approach to seeking higher returns that was backed by financial science.
Meanwhile, change was coming to the world of financial advice, too. Rejecting the traditional model that paid commissions on whatever financial products were sold, a new generation of advisors sought to simply offer that—advice—and to base that advice on financial science, not hunches or predictions.
